School is back in and so it is time for drivers to be extra cautious while on the roads, not just around schools but everywhere, since you never know when a young pedestrian might be crossing behind your driveway on the walk to school. Pedestrians always have the right-of-way and it is up to drivers to make sure they are obeying all the rules of the road so that a safe environment is provided for school children. Make sure to come to a complete stop at posted signs. Follow speed limits. Watch for school zone signs and crossing guards. Be aware of buses and their lights. Remember you can’t pass when those red lights are flashing whether you are behind a school bus, church bus or daycare bus. It is also a great time for parents to go over safety rules with their children. Although it is the responsibility of the drivers to watch for pedestrians, if youth learn safety rules early, it may prevent injury and will certainly lead to a lot less anxiety on the part of concerned parents. Children should know the route to school and the challenges that exist along that route. It is a good idea that a parent walks along with the child the first time or two he or she goes to school. Point out where to cross the road and what to look out for. Teach them to stop and look before crossing. Teach them not to play in the street or dawdle while crossing to lessen the chance of an accident. Youth riding bikes or skateboards need to follow these same rules. Wear a helmet, be aware of what you are doing and cross the roads with care. A bit of caution on the part of both pedestrians and drivers can prevent the kind of accidents that can haunt people and a community for years. So be cautious and aware -while enjoying those great back-to-school days. |
