Anyone suffering from ‘Olympic withdrawal’ need look no further than Bow Island during the March 25 weekend when the pee wees host their provincial hockey tournament, giving locals a chance to enjoy great hockey and cheer on the Rebels. Eight hockey teams will meet in Bow Island March 25 - 28, each vying to win the provincial championship during the 2010 Investors Group Pee Wee D Hockey Alberta Provincials, hosted locally this year. “Our local team is the host team and the seven other teams are qualifiers from each of the seven zones in the province,” said organizing chair Jocelyn Nelson. “Our first game will be Friday morning at 9 a.m.”It is also the only game of the competition taking place in Foremost, a nod to the fact that the local pee wee team is made up of players from both Bow Island and Foremost. Their will be a roast beef dinner Friday night at the Bow Island Legion from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at a cost of $10 for everyone over 14, or $8 for seniors and children 6 - 13. Kids under five are free. Opening ceremonies will take place at 6:15 p.m. “We want to encourage the whole community to come out and enjoy the festivities,” Nelson said. Directly following the ceremonies, the local team will face off against an opposing team once again. Saturday morning will begin with a pancake breakfast at the Legion from 7:30 a.m. until 11. The cost is $6 per person with children under five eating for free. A raffle room with autographed jerseys will be housed at the arena and besides 50/50s during every game, there will be a progressive 50/50. Winners of the raffle and progressive 50/50 will be announced Saturday evening at 6 p.m. The semi-final games will take place Sunday at 9:45 and 11:45 with the final scheduled for 5 p.m., however if the teams who make it to the final wish to hit the ice earlier, then the game may be rescheduled. The hockey weekend will cost $15 for an adult pass or $10 for a day. Seniors can purchase a weekend pass for $8 as can students, or day passes for $6. Children under five are free. “We have a great hardworking volunteer committee putting this together and we were very excited and honoured to be chosen as a host town by Hockey Alberta,” Nelson said. |
