As the needs of the people in Haiti continue following the recent earthquake that crippled the island nation, the need for financial support also continues. The students at Parkside School in Redcliff have risen to the occasion in fundraising efforts and on Friday afternoon presented a cheque for $465.61 to the Canadian Red Cross that they raised through a penny drive. The idea for the penny drive came from the school's spirit council, who had been looking for ways to show community spirit and ways of helping the less-fortunate. "The idea came together at a round-table table discussion," said Spirit council president, Brendan Johnson. Debra Schutte, community development coordinator for the Canadian Red Cross received the cheque for her organization. "This money will go directly to help the people of Haiti," said Schutte. "Canada has raised well over $100 million and over $80 million of that came directly from individual donations. It is because of people like the students of Parkside that we can help as we are," she added. Schutte also commended the students for learning at a young age the value of giving to others. "For these students to learn at their young age is so important. What they are learning now will carry with them throughout their lives," she said. Students were reminded each day during the campaign to contribute to the penny drive and large water bottles supplied by Simply Water were donated for the effort. The students, while recognizing the immense need in Haiti, also recognize that there is great need for help locally. "I think we should also help people right here in Redcliff and Medicine Hat," said one student. The students will no look for other ways of fundraising to do what they can to give a helping hand in their community. |
