All roads in and out of Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park were closed on Friday due to the floods that were occurring in the area, including washing over portions of Highway 41 South.
As well, people residing or camping in the park were evacuated on Friday morning.
"They had about one hour to get out. They were sent down Highway 514 to the Eagle Butte Road. They had a very small window of opportunity," said Peter Swain, head of visitor services at the park.
Cypress Hills received about 100 mm of rain prior to Friday's flooding in addition to excessive precipitation throughout the past two months.
"We were 400 percent above normal for the month before this. Now, we are 500 percent above normal. This is probably a 100-year event for us" he said.
Swain said there was extensive flooding throughout the park, with the main campground completely under water.
"We have closed all campgrounds and roads. Effectively, the park will be closed for most of the week," said Swain, adding that people who had paid for campsites will be reimbursed.
