There will be a change at Bow Island’s Youth and Family Centre, but that is not necessarily a bad thing said local FCSS coordinator Corinna Roth-Beacome.
The organization recently submitted its renewal for funding for the youth connections facilitator and was told the government is not longer looking at youth connections contracts. They were invited to resubmit the proposal and budget for a facilitator who would help with the needs of community members from 15 years old and up. They will also be keeping track of the people they help who are adults, something they couldn’t do before.
“The only real difference is there will be no school presentations anymore,” Roth-Beacome said. “A school would have to come to us, and we will be open for the public.”She added the facility will no longer be called youth connections either, though at the moment choosing another name isn’t a priority.
The hours and staffing will remain the same.
As for youth, they will still be welcome to utilize the centre though since it is also a business open for adults, that may mean toning down noise and any raucous behavior that may have been occurring.
“It’s a change, but not necessarily a bad change,” Roth-Beacome said.
She added that, in order to meet the needs of area youth, FCSS might hire some part-time help so the building can be open a few evenings a week just for youth and youth-centered activities.
Roth-Beacome added that the FCSS board is looking for another member, preferably a Bow Island area resident who is a parent of school-aged children. She said all travel and childcare costs members incur are covered by FCSS.
