Five local youth are heading off to perform at the Medicine Hat Rotary Music Festival beginning March 8 and continuing until March 21. Cody Dyck is the youngest of the youth attending, but at seven years old he is already a seasoned performer. He competed in speech for two years as well as piano last year. He has also been taking cello lessons for two years but this will be his first time performing in that category. He will do two speech performances, two cello and two piano. He said he is a little nervous. Tommy Schussler is nine years and has been performing in public since he was six. His sister, Anneke is 11 and has also been performing for several years. Both youth are very active 4-H members and will be sharing speech recitations at the festival. Graham Schaufele is 12 years old and, besides playing piano and cello, has a lovely singing voice. He will perform three vocal numbers at the festival as well as three piano and three cello recitals. Natalie Dyck is the eldest of the youth going, and at 18 this will be her last year of competition. She will share three viola pieces and participate in a chamber group. Ruth Dyck said that the Rose Bowl takes place on March 19 and on that day all of the best competitors from the festival perform, competing to be named best overall. She said everyone is encouraged to come out to the competitions held at the cultural centre at the Medicine Hat College, or in the college theatre. |
