Irvine hockey tourney The host team was the top dog at the 2010 Irvine peewee hockey tournament held at the Sports Complex on Jan. 29-31. Three teams from Medicine Hat, along with teams from Bow Island and Vauxhall traveled to Irvine for the annual tournament, but it was the Irvine Bull Dogs who won the final against the Vauxhall Sabres. The Irvine Bulldogs won their first game on Friday against the Medicine Hat Canucks by a score of 3-2. On Saturday, they drew a 1-1 tie with the Bow Island Rebels, with each team being awarded one point for the effort. Saturday evening, the Bulldogs came back recharged and shut out the Medicine Hat Blackhawks 9-0. The Vauxhall Sabres beat the Maple Creek Hawks in the semi finals on Sunday morning, beating them 4-2 and moving onto the final against Irvine. Going into the second period tied 1-1 in the final game on Sunday afternoon, the Bull Dogs got the upper-hand quickly and scored with 11:42 showing on the clock. An interference penalty a short time later, however, allowed the Sabres to return the favour and even the score once more. The Bull Dogs were the only ones to score in the third period, giving the host team the final game win. Bull dog manager Raquel MacPhail said the tournament was a success and there was lots of support in the stands for all the teams. "It was a fairly local tournament, so we had lots of support from family. There were lots of parents and grandparents in the stands," said MacPhail.
