The Jenner volunteer fire department are now equipped with top-of-the-line rescue equipment, thanks to several companies who conduct business in the area. Recently, the fire department was presented with extrication equipment for use in motor vehicle collisions and a number of other much-needed items to assist them with emergency situations. Firefighter Jeff Lewandowski said the department responds to more motor vehicle collisions than fires and heavy traffic from workers in the oil and gas industry has increased the number of calls the fire department has been receiving.

The Fire Within took 30 fire fighters from several departments across Canada to the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana from April 18-24. Bow Island won a spot in the draw to attend the conference, and the three local people responsible for organizing the Fire Within calendar were entered into a draw to see which of them would attend.

So far the gun registry legislation instituted by the Liberals in the mid 90s has gone so vastly over budget that it is hard to even compare the proposed costs with the actual costs to date. After the Conservatives began to administer the country with it’s minority government, amnesty was given to owners of rifles and shotguns facing prosecution for failing to register them. That amnesty was extended four times and is now set to expire on May 16, 2011.

Almost everyone in Bow Island knows Byron Hryciuk though some might not know him by name. He is that friendly stock boy who packs your groceries at the IGA then helps you cart them out to your vehicle. But, one has to wonder if anyone would have gotten the opportunity to know Byron if he hadn’t made a critical decision seven years ago, one that may have saved his life and certainly saved him and his family severe heartache and stress.

Education, advocacy and working with farmers will improve farm safety, not legislation, according to Richard Truscott, the Alberta Director of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). Truscoss added that he believes even one work related death on the farm is one too many and that something needs to be done to ensure farms are as safe as possible for their employees, however that goal will not be reached by adding reams of red tape through legislation to a farmer’s tasks.
